How to Top Up Your Income as a Stay-At-Home Mom

Choosing to be a stay-at-home mom is incredible. When your children are little, they change so much. And it’s great to be there with them every step of the way.

But at the same time, it can also mean that you lose out on that extra money you’d have if you were a working mom.

To some, this isn’t an issue. But when home costs are getting a little much, you may wish that you could bring in a little extra money. Or, on the flipside of this, you may actually miss the working world.

You may miss that time you have to yourself, working on something, and using your skills. So when this is the case, you may be looking for ways that you can work from home.

If you love the idea of being able to top up your income in your own time, here’s what you can do.

1. Start A Blog

First of all, you could start a blog. If you want something that you can do in your own time and on your own terms, blogging is great. You can literally pick any topic that you love, and get to work.

As long as you’re consistent and you’re willing to put the work in, this will work out for you.

When it comes to earning money, you can do this via:

  • advertising
  • affiliate marketing
  • or even making and selling your own products.

2. Offer Freelance Services

From here, you could also make some money by offering freelance services. If you have a particular skill set, then you could look to do this for yourself from home. There are lots of things you could do, just look at this freelance services list for inspiration.

You could offer:

  • writing
  • design
  • coaching
  • proofreading or even
  • photography services.

But that’s not all. Maybe you worked as an accountant before? You could also do that as a self-employed contractor too.

3. Get Crafty

Or maybe you’ve always wanted to make something?

If you love crafts and you’re always getting crafty with the kids and actually enjoying it yourself, why not do this and sell your products online?

From artwork to accessories, there’s a lot that you can make and sell on Etsy, Amazon, Facebook or even your own website.

4. Try A Driving Job

Another great way to make some money at home is to do is by driving.

Driving jobs can be flexible and allow you to work in your own time. Just consider local delivery services or even the ubereats driver sign up options you have.

If you have a vehicle, then you could make money from it. Even as a cab service!

5. Give Investing A Go

Finally, you might even want to invest. If you have some money already, and you want to be able to earn more, then putting that money into stocks and bonds could be a great option for you.

There are lots of platforms and funds that you can run yourself. Just be sure that you invest carefully if you’re a beginner and take fewer risks. Then, over time, you’ll watch your income grow.

Although I’m not married yet, I definitely have plans that I will become a stay-at-home mom when I marry and have kids. At least until they enter primary school.

Some may say that I’m a bit paranoid, but I feel that I have to plan for what I will do next time, especially with the high costs of living and always on-going inflation. After all, I can’t rely on my husband to provide all the bread and butter, can I?

I’ve taken a look at your post and think that blogging, freelancing or investing are good ideas. Which of these three would you most recommend and why?

Hi Rachel, well I would definitely say blogging because that’s how I’m making a living as a Stay-at-home Mom. And especially as you have time now to do the initial work to get your blog(s) up and running. Ideally, you would like to be earning (semi) passive income from blogging by the time your children are born. I say semi passive because I think it’s wise to keep up to date and keep adding fresh content even once your blog is established.
