How to Create More Space in Your Home

Have you reached that point where your home is bursting at the seams?  We sure have. So thrilled our building plans are approved and can’t wait to break ground in the New Year.

Here are a few excellent ideas for when you’re ready to expand your home.

How to Find More Space in Your Home When Your Family Grows

Once your family starts to grow, your house can start to feel smaller and smaller.

Not everyone has the luxury of being able to up sticks and move, so you need to find ways to create more space in the home you already have.

This may seem like an impossible task, but you would be surprised by how easy it is to achieve.

Let’s take a look at some suggestions…

Add an extra building

Companies like Armstrong Steel design and construct steel buildings, which are not only suitable for commercial use, but they are great for domestic properties as well.

If you have space in your garden, a steel building will give you an extra room so to speak.

You could use this for storage, or you could use it to create an outdoor garden or another living space. It’s completely up to you!

Overlap in open-plan

Another way to create more space and make your property look a lot bigger is to create overlapping zones.

For example, let’s say you have a separate kitchen, dining room and living room downstairs. By knocking down the walls and creating an open plan downstairs, you will feel the benefits. Plus, by installing a lightweight staircase, you can enhance the feeling of more space even further.

Bring in the daylight

While this tip won’t create more space, it will generate the illusion of more space, which will make your house feel a lot more comfortable despite there being more people in it.

Flooding your house with natural sunlight can make it feel twice the size. Plus, it will be a lot more welcoming and comfortable too.

Simply relying on harsh overheads is no good for anyone. It will make rooms feel small and dingy, and it will probably give you a few headaches too.

Assess where rooms are not pulling their weight

Once your family grows in size, you need to start thinking about the rooms you have in your home at present. Are they being used to full effect?

If not, think about the ways that you can reuse your rooms, so that they will be of greater benefit to everyone.

Common areas that aren’t often used to full effect include under-stairs areas, landings, conservatories, hallways, and corridors.

Dig down

Last but not least, have you thought about adding a basement? Of course, this is not the most cost effective solution.

Nevertheless, if you are really struggling for space and you have no extra land outside of your house, this could be the only solution. Plus, it is certainly the most effective when it comes to adding more space for the family to use.

As you can see, there are a number of ways you can make your house feel bigger once your family grows.

There is no need to put your property on the market and look for somewhere bigger. Make the most of what you have got. You will be surprised by how much of a difference this can make.
