Staying at home with your children can be the greatest blessing and joy you’ve ever known. Raising your children may fulfil every ounce and fibre of your being. For a while. Until it doesn’t. Until another need arises in you, a need to become part of the world at large again. To venture out of the home and contribute to society in a different way.
To create. To stimulate your mind in other ways. To uncover long lost gifts. To develop new skills.
Sometimes it’s forced on you by financial pressures. Sometimes it’s a calling, a knowing that there’s something out there requiring other aspects of you, requiring that you show up differently. Sometimes it’s just a feeling deep down inside that staying here, doing this, is not enough. You want more.
And then the fears start tumbling in. Are you ready? Is your family ready? Can you take this leap of faith?
And that’s when a post like the contributed post below may be just what the Doctor ordered.
What’s Keeping You From Your Perfect Career?
There are few things more frustrating than having a job where you just feel stuck. Whether it’s because you don’t feel challenged, you’re not passionate about the work that you do, or perhaps it’s simply because you’re bored, there comes a time in everyone’s life where they decide it’s probably time to move on.
And yet despite this, there are still plenty of people who stay stuck in jobs that they don’t feel passionate about. Why?
Here are a few of the most common reasons that many people don’t take the leap and go find that thing that they really want to do.
Fear
The idea of starting something new is scary. That’s just something that you’re going to have to get used to. If making a change and starting over was easy then everyone would be doing it all the time.
But, as the old saying goes, nothing worth doing was ever easy.
Sure there are risks involved when you try to change careers, but that risk can also be massively outweighed by the benefits when you finally find yourself doing something that you really care about.
Lack of skills
One of the biggest problems that many people have is that they want to break out into something else, but they simply don’t have the right set of skills. This is where the internet truly has become a godsend for many job seekers. Whatever skills you want to improve, there are online courses out there to help you do that.
Postgraduate education is one of the best ways to improve your skill set. If you’re looking to get into something like education then studying a school counsellor masters or a teacher training course is ideal and the same goes for something like medicine, for which postgraduate education is pretty much essential.
If you feel as though adding another arrow to your quiver would make the difference between staying stuck where you are and branching out into something more fulfilling, you owe it to yourself to find a way to develop that skill.
No experience
Perhaps you feel as though your lack of experience in the industry that you want to be a part of is going to be too large a hurdle for you to get over. This is a pretty common fear since many employers want candidates with at least some relevant experience.
The thing that many people forget is that there are a lot of things that can qualify as relevant experience across multiples career paths.
- Working within a team
- Taking the initiative
- Being able to follow instructions
- Adapting to new information and circumstances
These are all things that apply to pretty much every type of career. If you can show employers that you have experience from previous jobs that can be applied to the career that you want to pursue, then you can get over that hurdle much more easily than you might expect.
Of course, none of this is to say that changing your career and doing something more fulfilling is going to be easy, in fact, it’s probably going to be a lot of hard work. But you shouldn’t let that stand your way.
Once you’re in your new career, you’ll see how much all of that hard work was worth it.
Are fears and insecurities holding you back or are you ready to take a leap of faith? The world is waiting for you to share your precious gifts.
